Lawrence Taylor is on Centerstage tonight and, besides being one of my three favorite players of all time, has re-iterated a theme of great athletes: getting their ass beat by their mamas whenever they fucked up as a kid (a corollary being every actor on James Lipton's Inside the Actor's Studio seems to be a child of divorce.) And relishing it, looking on it with affection. You never see a successful person mention getting whipped as a kid without saying it was the best thing for them.
Of course, that's a generation or two ago; in 10, 15 years are we gonna hear people talk like this? Probably not. Spanking a kid sends a parent to the clink nowadays, not the kid to the Hall of Fame. But as of right now, there seems to be a high percentage of successful athletes who had parents that were hard on them. Interesting.
Of course, I couldn't go to bed as kid without getting my ass whipped, and look at me. Hmm.
