Elizabeth Gaskell groused and bitched about being forced to rush the ending of North and South thanks to it's serialized format, and while I can't say I would've picked up on it had I not already known, even when published as a novel with some tweaks from Gaskell you do sense a bit of a rush when it comes to her making enough people drop dead so it can officially be a Victorian novel. It reminds me of my favorite episode of Frasier, when Niles becomes pissed at Frasier's directing, and simply kills off everybody in the play as quickly as possible.
