Today is Jackie Robinson Day throughout Major League Baseball, and every player is wearing Jackie's #42. And every sportscaster and writer are trying to outdo each other re: tributes to Jackie's bravery and the abuse he took breaking the color barrier in baseball.
Jackie Robinson deserves all these tributes and more. But I also think this is an appropriate time to remember that at the same time millions of other people were going through the same abuse, and they weren't getting paid to play baseball.
