Slang

Jude the Obscure was written in 1895, and this morning as I was reading it a character mentioned something as being "played out." Which surprised me...I thought "played out" was invented in about 1995. As in "the hopes of Xmastime ever getting a girlfriend are played out." Anyways. Surprised me.
