I think the Washington Nationals would be fools to draft Stephen Strasburg and then fork over $50M to him so that he can play once a week. Unlike the NBA or NFL, the percentage of #1 draft picks who actually pan out is pretty small; meanwhile MLB is filled with great players who were drafted in like the 883rd round (the 1990 draft is prolly still going on, for fuck's sake.)
An even bigger reason is that it's not as if the Nationals are one player away from turning things around. They had the worst record in the league last year and are headed that way this year - having a kid come in and play every fifth day isn't gonna make that big a difference. See Steve Carlton, 1972 par exampla. They're better off turning this #1 pick into more value with more players, therein increasing the odds that some will even make it to the big leagues in the first place.
Mostly, I can't believe I'm talking about the MLB Draft. Wtf?
