XMASTIME Movie Review

Will Ferrell: nobody does "hey, I'm dopey Will Ferrell" better than Will Ferrell. Nice of him not to confuse us by changing things up; instead, he thoughtfully does the exact same thing he does in every movie he's ever been in so we know it's him.

Guy That At One Time Was a Really Good Actor but Decided to Throw It Away So He Could Try to Be Will Ferrell: Shitty.

The Dad from Six Feet Under: the only thing in the movie that's actually funny.

Mary Steenbergen: how the FUCK is this bitch this smoking hot after 1) being 80 years old 2) fucking Sam Malone for 20 years? Wow.

Movie: please.

Your obsession with Will Ferrell is getting out of hand. Did Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, W.C. Fields, the Marx Brothers, the Three Stooges, Laurel and Hardy, etc. change it up in every one of their movies? You don't find him funny? Fine. Lots of people do. There's always the hilarity of Mad Men there for you.

Comparing any of those actors, who spent weeks upon weeks rehearsing their films, practicing to get every movement and nuance right, even Fields, to Will Ferrell is asinine. Will is a funny film comic for three minutes at a time. For the other 100+ minutes he is sloppy, poorly scritpted, lacking in physical precision, and totally devoid of punchlines. Comedy has been happening for millenia and it's always taken a LOT of work to do well. The Apatow-ites are so sure that they did enough improv games during undergrad that they don't have to work at it anymore.
That said, Ferrell's stage show about Bush WAS well-rehearsed, precise, and a pretty damn good satire. Still a little overlong, but much funnier than his films.

agreed. this over-ironic funny-by-NOT-being funny shit is enough already. and i LOVED Ferrell on SNL, put him #2 to phil hartman. but i think we've all seen enough of the "Ferrell Dead Stare" to last a lifetime.

Apatow is the Britney Spears of comedy. show up, do your thing, get a big fat check, wait for the next tune. rinse, lather, repeat. camon.
