Because we're used to having to take it when he lords over how much smarter he is than everybody else, every football "expert" is having a good time this morning piling on how Bill Belichick made the "dumbest coaching decision of all time!!!" (including Wilbon, for example) in going for it on 4th down at the end of last night Pats/Colts game. This is everybody's chance to finally show how much smarter than Belichick they are. Hmm.
While I can't say I would've done the same thing in his position, I think being as completely aghast as everyone is at the no-brainer that it was the worst coaching decision of all time is a bit of a stretch, for several reasons.
1) as for the play itself, Belichick was about 24 inches from looking like a genius. Even more than that, replay MIGHT'VE shown it to be a first down if Faulk hadn't been bobbling the ball. That shows you the fine line between stupidity and genius in the NFL
2) in this era of play it safe, punting on 4th-and-1 at the 40 while down by 21 for no reason, go for the tie instead of the win coaching decisions by rote, it's refreshing as fan to see a coach make a tough decision, and I would think the players liked it too. All this nonsense of "his defense's feelings are hurt" is complete bullshit; players will take a coach who has the killer instinct to say "fuck 'em, let's step on their throats and end it right here" every time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but that's sports. I would think it'd be more disheartening for a coach to say "when the game is on the line I don't think you can move the ball 6 feet." How many times have you seen players beg the coach to let them go for 2 for the win? Plenty. How many beg to kick the extra point for the tie? Never.
3) After all that's said and done, it doesn't fucking matter - the Pats are still two games ahead of two sub-.500 teams for the lead in the super-crappy AFC East. So while they're bummed they lost, does anybody think the Patriots aren't gonna win their division and be right where they wanna be come playoff time? Of course not. Bilichick rolleed the dice and went for closing the door on an undefeated team while on the road. He came within inches of keeping the ball out of maybe the greatest quarterback of all time's hands. It's not like they lost to the Lions in Foxboro.
4) That play didn't automatically mean the Colts won. They still had to go down the field and score.
So fucking relax. He rolled the dice a bit, it backfired, but in the end it won't fucking matter one bit. Enjoy this moment if you must, but there will come another time where you will be reminded that Beilichick is better at coaching football than you are at anything, so.
Plus, I'm guessing Tom Brady is already back to being "happy."

Your need for text can't be this bad. Sometimes a ham sandwich is just that. Incrtedibl stupid call, he got burned and lost the game, and all the rest (including Belichek's Botox countenance) is poo.
