As a somewhat strange side note, this incident serves to overshadow Ken Griffey Jr's retirement, at least for a little while, which oddly mirrors his entire career somewhat, as the juiced-up monsters of the last 15 years seemed to eat up all the headlines while Griffey marched on to a first-ballot all-time great Hall of Fame career.
Also, as absurdly terrible as that call was, it's also one of those things that's so perversely incredible about baseball. I mean, here's a barely .500 Detroit team playing a meaningless game on June 2, and they'll be talking about it in Detroit a hundred years from now.

As a die hard Tigers fan, (I watched more than my fair share of games during the '03 season and I still fucking love Alan Trammell) this is one of those things that steels you in your love of a team. Would a perfect game have been great? Yeah. If this turns into some kind of Bill Simmons multi-hyphenated thing where the Tigers go out an beat the rest of the AMerican League to death from now til the All-Star break, even better. The 7-8-9 hitters had better get their shit together, because Verlander is throwing in the high 90s for the next fifty innings he's on the mound. GO TIGAS!!!!
So heartbreakingly sad--and infuriating--what went down in Detroit Wed night.

Is it possible that the batter slowed up just enough to...he appears shocked at the call as well.
Galarraga has amazing self control and seems empathetic and quick to forgive Joyce. No doubt, he will have many opportunities for a perfect game, but not that many to demonstrate this kind of maturity and character in the face of utter disappointment. Attitude weighs heavily when it comes time to be picked for another team...no?
