The battle over the ground-zero mosque is more than another battle in the heated culture wars. It is a watershed moment: the point at which liberal multiculturalism capitulated to the relentless march of political Islam. Muslim radicals around the world rightly will view it as a triumph over the feckless American infidel: Even the site of their deadliest attack against America is not free from Islam's looming presence. This event signifies the loss - the defeat - of American will and purpose in the struggle against jihad. To me, the crux of this whole thing is that if 10 years ago Bin Laden was told that his attacks on 9/11 would spur the US into spending trillions on wars and play a part in pushing it to another Great Depression, all while gripping the entire country into incredible waves of fear and political polarization, he would be dancing, clicking his heels with giddiness. And if after all that you told him oh by the way, they're also agreeable to tossing one of their fundamental tenets, freedom of religion, out the window he would be gobsmacked with glee. Icing on the cake.
People falling for the Palin/Gingrich manifesto make Bush's "keep shopping" sound like Winston Churchill.
