As much as we pretend to care about veterans on a day like today, the truth is that even under the best of circumstances it's a horrible, horrible thing to send our fellow humans to war. As much as we pat ourselves on the back today, we should also be ashamed of ourselves. There's a reason that people who have never served talk about "Freedom!" and "American Exceptionalism!" while those who have served have shit themselves praying to god they make it back home to their mothers. You will never hear a veteran talk about how glad he was to dissect the founders' idea of freedom upon the enemy, you will only see him shake his head in wonder that he's still alive. Maybe that's something to think about from now on.
