Here's some people discussing classics that are overrated. I'm miffed at the writer of the article for dissing my man Thomas Hardy; I loves me some TH, and his writing the scene that made me the angriest I've ever been while reading a book only makes me love him even more. Nom nom nom!
Anyone claiming Ulysses or Finnigan's Wake as "over-rated" seems silly since they're such anomalies as "books" anyway - I read them only for the rhythm.
Though it is comforting to see that while reading and loving The Catcher in the Rye as a teenager is a rite of passage, looking back on it as an adult as being trite nonsense is as well.
