An unquestioned faith is not faith but rote recitation. The opposite of such questioning is not deep belief but arrested development. The first 18 years of my life I dutifully showed up at church every single Sunday and mindlessly went through the motions while considering myself to be a good Catholic, and today I am an atheist. But because of the long, slow development that is life and growth, I'm self-aware enough to know there's no reason to believe that 20 years from now I'll be as sure about what I believe today than I did in, say, 1987.
On a side note, a year ago Marley generously sent me Willis' Nixon Agonistes, of which I read the first half and absolutely loved before setting it down and forgetting to pick it up again for some reason. I'll read it again.
