LINCOLN
The opening scene was one of the worst, corniest, cringe-inducing scenes in movie history, and realizing one of the dudes was Lukas Haas did not help the gravity of the scene for some reason, and I have no idea why they bothered with the death stuff at the end, but in between was an awesome fucking movie. The two-plus hours flew by, which is hard to do considering it’s about legislation.
And yes, just give the goddam Oscar to Daniel Day-Lewis already, why go through the façade of pretending anyone’s topping him? At times I bitched his body language was over-the-top craggy, but the dude nailed the tragic weight of Lincoln’s face to a scary, scary degree.
EVERYone was great – Tommy Lee Jones, who overcame the worst wig seen on a screen since The Ramones were inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame; the guy playing Seward who’s
been in every movie ever made; the hotshot kid from Bad News Bears; everyone. Hell,
James Spader should get an Oscar mention for his playful, goofy mf. He was impeccable.
Another negative is how they made Robert Lincoln to be a bit of a simpering, petty, temper-tantrum-waiting-–to-happen foolish teen, which isn’t anything like what I’ve ever picked up on in books.
I expect this movie will get better after a few watches, when the distractions of "omg, that's the guy from___________!" go away.

You should have moved to Richmond a few years ago, a lot of it was filmed there and some of my daughter's VCU classmates were extras.
