Nonsense

via Sully we see this quote, about writers needing to suffer:
I think writing, or art, it comes from an injury. Something happened in your life and it opened a wound..I can’t escape that. The pain is in there, somewhere. It’s hidden. Even if I don’t see it in my everyday life… Writers are very strange people and they need to suffer, I think.
This is of course utter nonsense. Everybody suffers. We think writers have a unique relationship with suffering, because guess who gets to tell us about their suffering? Writers. It's a version of the old "history's written by the winners" quote. Or, loosely, the chicken/egg quote: do writers write because of suffering, or do they write about suffering, because they can?
