We all remember Laettner's shot, and we all assume that after that the championship was inevitable. But in retrospect, Duke had a four-game stretch which included:
1. Bobby Hurley having to go head-to-head vs. his brother at Seton Hall
2. The Kentucky game
3. A Final Four matchup of Coach K vs his, rather famously, mentor Bobby Knight, which freaked everybody the fuck out.
4. A title game against the Fab Five, who earlier in the season had had their national coming-out game by barely losing to Duke in overtime and were touted as the present and future of college basketball.
That, my friends, is a helluva run. Is it possible that that team, which a year earlier had vanquished probably the greatest team of all time in a Final Four rematch, is even better than we thought it was?
