Almost 10 years ago to the date I wondered about the curious case of why David Thompson was wildly overlooked in my youth as a huge ACC fan. And right now Mad Dog, while screaming about the nonsense of the recent ESPN greatest college basketball player of all time tournament (I refuse to link because it's asinine) is reminding us about how great David Thompson was, including telling the story of how David Thompson had exactly one dunk in his career.

Dunking had been banned of course because of Lew Alcindor, but in his final home game NC State was up by about a zillion points in the final minute so Thompson said "fuck it" and threw one down. A technical was called but while he was walking to the bench for the final time the crowd was going berserk.
