Usually on June 18 I blather about Paul McCartney's birthday, but I just realized that it's also the great Paul Eddington's birthday. He died in 1995 and would've been 93 today. Eddington first grabbed the public's attention by stealing The Good Life along with the legendary Penelope Keith as the neighbors, maybe the first instance of the supporting cast being funnier than the mains?
But of course he made his legacy as Jim Hacker in the immortal Yes, Minister, the precursor to all political satire shows, from The Thick of It to Veep and everything in between (it's no coincidence that Armando Iannucci spoke for Yes, Minister in 2004's special Britain's Best Sitcom.) Watch the entire first episode below, it's worth it, and the whole series on Britbox.
