Is Greg Daniels a "Gavin and Stacey" Fan?

One of the most famous running gags in sitcoms is the Uncle Bryn & Jason fishing trip in Gavin & Stacey; the humor comes from our never finding out what the hell happened.

And the same thing seems to be happening in Space Force, with not even Greg Daniels knowing why Lisa Kudrow is in prison:
...but through it all we never learn why Maggie is in prison, or what she did to get arrested. We don’t even get hints towards what kind of behavior might put her there in the first place.

So when I spoke to Greg Daniels during the press day for Space Force, I asked him why they chose to keep the reason behind Maggie’s imprisonment. The short answer? Because it was funny:

Well, both Steve and I think that it’s very funny to just hear little hints of it, and not know the full story, that it gives her character a certain mysterious energy.
Or is this just something shows will do now, like Home Improvement (Wilson the neighbor) and The Big Bang Theory (Howard's mother) using Cheers' tactic of never showing a character onscreen (Vera)?
