Murmur has always been my favorite R.E.M. album (with Life's Rich Pageant chomping at its ankles!). It came out 40 years ago today, is one of the greatest debut albums of all time, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a band and an album that had more influence over an entire musical movement, the 1980s Amerindie/college rock/alternative genre that once did and still does today gives us countless great bands.
There's not much I can say that a kazillion people aren't already saying it, but cheers to living legend Mike Mills for not doing the usual "oh our first album sucked and then we magically became amazing with our most recent stuff" that bands like to do (eyeballs roll out of my head).
