24 Years Ago Today...

[NOTE: this is an old post but with the Yankees being impossible to fucking stomach watching these days why not celebrate it again]

...David Cone pitched what had to be the most economical perfect game ever, with only 88 pitches. I can still see pitch after pitch sailing from 3 to 8, with helpless batters offering only weak miss after miss after miss. But of course what made the game truly magical was the fact that it happened to be Yogi Berra Day at The Stadium, and none other than Don Larsen threw out the first pitch. It was one of those spine-tingling moments in sports, and I'm glad I got to see all 88 pitches (on tv, of course.)

Making the game even more remarkable was that it was "Yogi Berra Day" at Yankee Stadium. After a 14-year feud with owner George Steinbrenner, Berra agreed to return to the stadium that day for the first time, and caught the ceremonial first pitch from fellow perfect game pitcher Don Larsen. Larsen could be seen smiling in the press box after the final out was recorded.
