Let's Raise the Ruth!

Babe Ruth tried to steal 2nd base in Game 7 of the 1926 World Series with 2 outs & the Yankees down 3-2. On deck was a scrappy little batter named Lou Gehrig who popped out of his mother's womb knocking in a coupla RBI. Ruth got thrown out. Series over.

Was this the single worst/most embarrassing moment ever for a superdupersuperstar with such lofty eternal sports status as Ruth? "But Xmastime", you say in the voice of Craig “Ironhead” Heyward from those soap commercials (RIP), “didn't you the same thing about Patrick Ewing over a dozen years ago?"

Sigh. Yes I did, faithful readers, YES I did - BUT that was more of a disaster for an entire team, not a single moment by a superstar.

I don't know why more isn't made of this amazing moment, particularly since the next season Ruth had the most iconic major league season ever for the most iconic baseball team of all time. Is this the single greatest example of from-one-season-to-the-next redemption in sports history? Where's that sports doc?

I've known all these details most of my life, but until today I'd never heard this, via Wikipedia:
Game 7 of the 1926 series marked the last postseason loss for the team in a decade. The Bronx Bombers would go on to sweep their next three World Series, 1927, 1928, and 1932. Their next World Series loss would be Game 1 of the 1936 World Series which the Yankees would eventually win 4 games to 2.
Ruth wasn't on that team, so he never lost a postseason game again after his stealing blunder. Incredible.
