I'm blazing through The Crown because of course I am and they're reeeeeallly chewing up the scenery with the whole "Diana's tragic days of trying to not be photographed on 200-foot yachts" and while I'm not saying there's no real anxiety or trouble there, it's also made it occur to me that we love watching tv shows about insanely rich people for the same reason we like watching horror movies - because no matter how terrifying any situation will be, we know it's all going to end up perfectly fine. It's part of the reason we love Curb Your Enthusiasm so much - we all love watching Larry David supposedly fuck himself over by stepping into some huge mess, but we also know that thanks to his outrageous fortune the reset button will be hit and the next morning he'll just wake up perfectly fine.
Obviously this thesis would only seem to work right up until the moment Diana was run into that tunnel, but otherwise it makes perfect sense. We love watching Diana agonize over her sons seeing a photo of her in a gold-dipped helicopter with some guy, but if you tried to show us the story of some woman who wasn't able to pay a parking ticket and got thrown in jail and had to remain in jail because she couldn't pay to get out of jail and then lost her job and everything else as she rotted in jail over a $55 fine and then killed herself we'd roll our eyes and flip channels in total boredom.
