Ralph & Lefty

It's kind of weird that I've never heard of Lefty Driesell going after Ralph Sampson when he was the greatest high school recruit of his generation. Lefty remained obsessed about Moses Malone until the day of his death, always lamenting the big "what if?" had Moses come to Maryland so they could be "The UCLA of the East". And it's not like Ralph wasn't waffling right up to the end - he famously almost said "Kentucky" at his own damn press conference when he announced for UVa - but I've never read about Lefty trying to swoop in and get Ralph. And College Point was pretty much just as close to Ralph as Charlottesville, and the programs couldn't have been more polar opposite at the time in term of both success and visions of immediate future success. Was it a respect for Terry Holland thing, since they'd been together at Davidson? It just seems weird that he didn't make a really big play for Ralph after losing out on his White Whale Moses, much less any play for Ralph at all. 🤔🤷‍♂️
