My longtime affection & admiration for Ethan Hawke led me to try listening to his daughter Maya talk about her new album on a podcast for 10 minutes before her incredibly sincere earnestness made me hurl myself out a window. But before I turned away, when talking about how important lyrics are to her she said that it's just flat-out impossible for her to love any song if she doesn't love the lyrics first.
This is the total opposite of me; I have to love a song's sound, melody, rhythm & overall energy before I even start giving a shit what the lyrics are.
But that's the absolute magic of music itself; Hey Jude is a beautiful song about a best friend's son but one day Paul McCartney is going to die and a billion people are going to celebrate him by singing the "na-na-na-na na na-na" coda together over & over until our tears dry, so you tell me? 🤔🤷♂️
