For No One has always been my favorite on Revolver, and it looks like some scrappy little upstart named Elvis Costello may agree with me (Xmastime Mukluks to Batcountry1980):
“For No One is everything that’s great about Paul McCartney in one song. It’s a really beautiful melody. He’s like a fantastic movie actor who doesn’t do anything. He doesn’t over-dramatize. There’s no vibrato. There’s some timbre, and I suppose the word people would use is ‘wistful.' To me it’s his best lyric, not that there aren’t many others after that and before. It’s the one where, I think, you could make a case for how unique a lyricist he is. It’s not a song anyone else has written. Not even remotely like a song I can think of. And not really many since, the way it’s laid out. And yet, aside from all that, the telling of the story is like that of a playwright. The beauty of the McCartney tune is you could just sing along and it not occur to you, but the minute it does occur to you, it’s inescapable. It's about as perfect a record as you could make."What's weird about Paul McCartney's greatness is that ever since John Lennon got shot people wanna say Paul's the "lightweight" lyricist and yet you could say the exact same above about Eleanor Rigby...or She's Leaving Home...or Paperback Writer....or......................
Usually I would just post the album version below but this is really great; I have no idea where/when it's from (looks like Anthology-era 90s tho) but watching him not being able to stop himself from doing the horn sounds with his mouth while singing & playing is just too great to miss out on. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
