The thing about the Madoff Ponzi scheme deal is, how do you punish someone like that? Dude is 71 years old - he spent about 35 years taking people for billions, and living the fucking life. And now that he's been "busted", he's basically gonna be sentenced to living out whatever little time he has left alive to a country club with guards. How do you really punish someone like that; how do you really send out a message to other people here?
If you thought you could live like a billionaire into your 70's, and then even if you got busted it's not like you'd be put in a real prison, isn't it pretty much worth the risk? Gee, your diaper-wearing years will be spent in merely the lap of KIND OF luxury. Seems mildly pointless to do anything to him, doesn't it?
Someone in the paper this morning paraphrased the Mark Twain quote, "Steal a loaf of bread and you go to jail; steal $50B and you go to the penthouse."
I seem to have no answers, only questions. A rarity for me! ;)
