Of course I'm happy to have Mark Texiera on the Yankees. Seems like a nice guy, and oh by the way clubs the hell outta the ball and is a Gold Glover (sorry, Big G.)
But what's with him claiming Don Mattingly is his #1 idol...didn't he grow up with Orioles season tickets? Why the fuck would he love Mattingly so much - wouldn't his idol be Cal Ripken, or Eddie Murray, or...an Oriole? If I find out he's bullshitting, that this is one of those absurd "have to placate the Yankee fan who thinks even if someone grew up in Fenway Park they hafta claim they're a Yankee fan" nonsense, I'm gonna go ballistic. I understand fandom. Any real fan would also. Why can't he just come out and say he grew up worshipping Cal and hating the Yankees? Don't they think I can understand that as a Yankee fan? For fuck's sake; THAT I get - anything else kinda smells funny to me. Grrrr.

Of course he's bullshitting. It goes with the territory of being a Yankee. He's off to a great start!
He also blamed his wife who convinced him on "Friday date night at the country club" to go to the Yankees. Whipped and a bullshitter.
the 23 he wore wasnt for david segui.
From what I read, he lived outside Baltimore but grew up a Yankees fan, he even used to wear his NY hat to games at Memorial Stadium.
Um, yeah. Like Ope said. I'm surprised that you weren't aware of his wearing #23 in honor of Mattingly on every uniform he's worn.
i refuse to accept that someone could grow up having season tickets for one team AS A KID!!! and be a fan of that team and yet his favorite player was for a division rival. no way. there's bullshit somewhere there.
Be that as it may, X. What IS a matter of fact is that Tex has been trumpeting his Mattingly idolatry both in words and uniform number years before he even dreamed of signing with the Yankees. Is it bullshit? I don't think so. But it's definitely not a recent development on his part.
