Some Guy Named Richard Posner Loves Xmastime

Today via Yglesias I see that Richard Posner said this about the GOP:
My theme is the intellectual decline of conservatism, and it is notable that the policies of the new conservatism are powered largely by emotion and religion and have for the most part weak intellectual groundings.

I have no idea who Richard Posner is, but he must be brilliant since he's only 4 months behind a certain devilishly-handsome, rico suave blogger we all know and wanna sleep with:
One thing that has surprised me is how quickly the GOP went from the party of no-nonsense, button-down seriousness to one of symbols and histrionic emotions; there is no argument they think they can't win with a moving, tear-jerker anecdote about soldiers, flags and Jesus.

Emote on, right-wingers!

The problem has never been the intelligence behind conservative ideals or their proposed solutions. It is convincing a "What Have You Done for Me Lately?" voting bloc that is getting progressively dumber by the second to take any moral stand whatsoever. Of course, this rhetoric is backed up by two key philosophers - Scottie from Hardbodies' Bigger and Better Deal theory on picking up chicks AND Mike Judge's entire script for Idiocracy. YORF

well, they were dumb enough to re-elect Bush and came out 50M strong for McCain, so it's taken quite an effort for the GOP to shake a lot of Americans, who were fine with "what have you done for me lately, oh, nothing, but gays cant kiss in the midwest so ill vote for you." A Herculean effort, one may say.
