Gets personal.
If there's one scare tactic you'd think the Republicans would think wouldn't be worth trying, you'd think it would be the "he wants to pull the plug on Grandma!!" one, Obama being unique among recent presidents in not only having a grandma that helped raise him, but also died right before the election, all of us watching him mourn her. You'd think they'd scrap that idea, thinking there's no way it would work in this particular case, they'd better come up with something else. And you'd think Republican voters would go "hold on now, here's a guy that just lost his grandmother that was so close to him - do I REALLY believe 'killing Grandma!!' is his raison d'etre here?" But it's the EXACT tactic they've taken. And, since most people cannot put one and one together to make two, it's pretty much worked rather fabulously. In other words, they've taken the EXACT scenario that should not be applicable, and applied it, and people have eaten it up like complete idiots.
Bruce re: Born in the USA being misinterpreted: "It's not that people don't think, it's that they don't think enough."
Hopefully this statement by Obama will remind everybody oh yeah, the whole scenario seems unlikely.
