I'm spending a lot of the upcoming months in a-tizzy about the upcoming DT and the Shakes/Rational Herdsmen reunion, but the best band in the state back then was probably The Good Guys, from Richmond, whose incredible live cover of Baby Come Back led me to The Equals, my squad of squads as you guys all know. A live tape of a show in Norfolk from 1984 in Norfolk was branded into my brain during high school thanks to repeated listenings; maybe one day I'll convert the cassette so it can be posted on Xmastime. Here's a video I found of one of their shoulda-been hits, Beeline (here incorrectly titled Only Sixteen.) A little more Jesus-y than I like my rock, but still a great song.
Harry Gore is one of my favorite guitar players ever, which I got blather breathlessly to him once years back. I don't know what impressed me more - his fucking beaming throughout the entire show, his awesome guitar playing, or his leg kicks that seemed an inch from busting through the ceiling.
Runners-up for Richmond would prolly be the Cashmere Jungle Lords, which of course reminds me of getting busted fidgeting with my nuts. Ah, sweet youth.

You can still find Harry out front of Plan 9 playing for change. A shame, but he still gets to do what he loves.
And I converted the tape to CD years ago. So in XMAS to Gnat vernacular, "I've been had that shit."
