The Middle isn't gonna break any records for originality, it kinda continues the sitcom traditional "exasperated mom" formula. But it does this better than 99% of any other sitcoms from the last few decades. Right now I'd put it behind only
The Office and
Modern Family. One unique thing about it is that every one of the main characters is actually really funny - in particular the Charlie Brown-headed little kid is hysterical. Throw in Brian Doyle-Murray and the girl looking like an anteater and you got a winner.

It's not even as good as Cougar Town right now. It just isn't breaking any ground - e.g. same plot themes as Cosby, direct copy of Malcolm in the Middle dynamic without the novelty and livelihood, etc.

Yikes, the little kid still scares me. He will be a frightening adult - probably a Gary Coleman, Emanuelle Lewis creepy doll kinda thing.
