Lil' Sniffs Shoots, Scores

One would think that having been revealed to be someone who has dabbled in witchcraft would be a silver bullet in one's political hopes, particularly when trying to run as a candidate for a party that demands strict adherence to being a Jesus-loving super-christian (WWJD? probably not be a major fan of the Black Arts.)

So when Christine O'Donnell's first ad came out yesterday and she led off with talking about her past dealing with witchcraft, you'd think okay, coming out and reminding everybody about he witch stuff will REALLY bury her. But by the end of it, it turns out the ad is actually fairly brilliant. Her "I'm you" taps perfectly into the "real American folks'" incredible fear of having to acknowledge that there's somebody smarter and more capable than themselves to run the country. "I'm just as fucking dumb as you" is the new "guy I'd like to have a beer with" credo; mix that in with someone who's not even capable of recalling which colleges she attended and you have the perfect non-elitist running to make you feel better about being an idiot yourself. Staggeringly horrible for the country, but great for O'Donnell.

Donnelly and her PR people understand that real American voters are less apt to jump to conclusions once people see and hear for themselves. Understandably, the the left will continue undermining and hurling insults. Politics would have it no other way. Without delving further into the confusion, she keeps the message simple and brief reflecting confidence in the fact that unlike your estimation, most people are NOT stupid and fearful, but understand the subversive nature of political opposition and media. For those neutral folks who left hanging and most alarmed at her comments, she seeks to reassure them, and attempt to disqualify any misconceptions about her past. Historically, with enough cash flow and support, the politician with a checkered past can navigate his/her way around these quandaries, as long as they don't include sexually immoral behaviors. Right?
