Having grown up in DC, Op's relationship with the police is somewhat different than my own Mayberry youth allowed me, as highlighted here:

undercover cops on the subway are as easy for me to spot as tourists.

To which my immediate response was "wait - there's undercover cops on the subway? Whhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat??!!!?!?"
