Oh By Dickens!

Here's a handy-dandy short list of "the best" Dickens tv/movie adaptations. I've only seen two of them, 1938's A Christmas Carol, which is great, and 2011's Great Expectations, which I didn't like as you loyal fans recall.

It's a dubious list - are Bill Murray's Scrooged and the 1998 Gwyneth Paltrow (MET HER NAKED, BTW)* version of Great Expectations REALLY actual adaptations of the books, or merely springboards? Hmm. I'm also calling bullshit on this list because the 1946 classic version of Great Expectations starring John Mills isn't on here (available now on HBO Max, btw).

I am looking forward to the last movie from the list, an upcoming version of David Copperfield:

This upcoming adaptation from Armando Iannucci (creator of Veep and director of In the Loop and The Death of Stalin) is humorous, energetic, and stylish. With Dev Patel in the leading role, plus star turns by Hugh Laurie, Benedict Wong and Tilda Swinton, it gives a fresh facelift to one of Dicken's most beloved stories. The film debuted in London this January, and premiered in the United States in August.

Armando Iannucci? Dev Patel? Hugh Laurie? David Copperfield? Yes please!

Personally, I've always loved the BBC's 1974 Great Expectations starring Michael York. Faithful to the book, reeks of 70's BBC cheapness and Michael York just has a dopey face you can't help but root for. Seek that out, faithful readers!
