Thomas Jefferson has taken a lot of stick for his seemingly ambivalent views on slavery: the very man who authored the single greatest document in American history about freedom and equality also owned a bunch of slaves himself.
Meanwhile, Norman Lear wrote a sitcom about a black family who engineered their own upward status into the dizzying heights of Manhattan's East Side, no longer needing to answer to any white man - is there a reason he named them "Jefferson"?
