Fine. I'll Say It.

An article on the latest Ken Burns doc, The American Buffalo, leads with the question/premise, “Why are Americans so destructive?” This kind of question always leads to “As Americans we’re this, we’re that, we have a spirit from 250 years ago blah blah blah”; like it’s some X-men genetic mutation that we can only shrug our shoulders at, that somehow some sort of “American spirit” is an excuse to do asshole stuff; I submit that if you’re doing asshole stuff in the year 2023 it’s less about some sort of cultural genes and historical legacy bullshit combo & more that you’re just a fucking asshole.
