Why Is Rick Perry Being Taken Seriously?

One thing that's funny about Rick Perry is how seriously we're automatically supposed to take him.  We wave off Palin/Bachmann/Paul/Cain/Santorum et al as "crazy", but when Perry shows up we somberly agree that unlike them he's a man who, while we may disagree with him on the issues, is to be taken seriously as a no-nonsense leader who can crack the whip and get an entire country into shape.

And yet Rick Perry has advocated secession, doesn't think anything government has ever done or will ever do is constitutional except, presumably, writing a Constitution, and wants textbooks to show that Jesus and Reagan built Mount Rushmore with their bare hands the night before they went out and beat the Colts in Super Bowl III.  The best thing he's come up with so far for saving the economy has been to rent out a stadium and pray to the sky, which was also his big plan for getting it to rain, and his latest idea is to kill Ben Bernanke for printing money.  In other words, Perry is showing himself to be crazier than the rest, and shouldn't be given a pass simply for being a white male who looks "presidential" while in a blue suit or "talking tough!" while standing on hay bales behind a pickup truck.  The only "normal" thing about him so far is that he's a hypocrite when it comes to turning down federal $crillah.
