Explaining away the ERA difference vs. Wells as an AL v. NL thing is cheap and ridiculously lazy, considering we can look at ERA+ for an apples-to-apples comparison vs. peers and see Wells, while good, clearly isn't in Schilling's ballpark ERA-wise (108 v. 127). Schilling has 6 All-Star appearances to Wells' 3. Sure they both humiliated the Yankees in the postseason, but other than that they're not even close.
Not that being better than David Wells should make one a Hall of Famer but that's the dumb argument Celizic is making. Schill's HOF credentials are his combination of whiffs (3000+, 15th all-time) and impeccable control, along with ERA, winning pct. and postseason winning % figures comparable to exisiting HOF pitchers.
Of course his douchiness is what's going to put him over the top. His painstaking attempt to put himself on the right side of the steroid debate had to have been calculated to make him look great when the writers consider the class of 2013 (Clemens, Bonds, Sosa, Piazza, etc).
some nice points, but like I said here http://xmastime.blogspot.com/2008/11/moose.html re: Mussina:
I'm of the belief that such a player should transcend his own sport - in other words my criteria is pretty much "has Sistatime! ever heard of this person?" Whenever is comes down to two dudes from Elias Sport Bureau playing "Dueling Stats," I have my doubts re: a player's merit to be a Hall of Famer.
Yeah, strictly numbers-wise Schilling isn't a first-ballot HoFer, but that fuckin' sock will get him in there, damn it. It pains me to know that Schilling has a better W-L record in the WS than Whitey Ford. Grrr..
Btw, I love the Sistatime litmus test.
