Unfortunately, over the last decade, we have not done what is necessary to shore up the foundation of our own prosperity. We have spent over a trillion dollars at war, often financed by borrowing from overseas. This, in turn, has short-changed investments in our own people, and contributed to record deficits. For too long, we have put off tough decisions on everything from our manufacturing base to our energy policy to education reform. As a result, too many middle class families find themselves working harder for less, while our nation's long-term competitiveness is put at risk. - President BarryA lot of reasons have been listed over the last several years for our economy tanking. Duped by Wall Street, selling houses to poor people, reality tv, take your pick. And my favorite - taxing businesses that prevent them from hiring new employees, despite the notion that logic would dictate that if a company is producing so much that it needs more employees it is actually selling those products and therein can afford to pay it's new help.
But one reason that has been habitually ignored, or seen as "unpatriotic" to bring up, has been the fact that oh yeah, by the way, we're spending a trillion dollars in Iraq. Since we're a nation that demands to be frightened at all times, maybe the only way to finally bring the point home is to point out that while we've been running around the globe in the name of freedom and Jesus, "Scary, Creepy" China has been spending it's time and money on China, doing everything we should've been doing in terms of infrastructure, education, public transit, global warming, etc etc. I know it makes me a freedom-hating commie, but I'm glad to see Obama point out the price all this nonsense has placed on the sheer numbers of our economy.
