John Denver, West Virginia

XMASTIME on Take Me Home, Country Roads a few years back:
Definitely a funeral slice, an amazingly beautiful song about an amazingly beautiful, picturesque state. How in the world it was ever handed over to these guys in the first place is a complete mystery, but oh well. Also, I can’t hear this slice without thinking of our yearly camping trips in Skyline Drive when I was a young buck. And how bout the whitest guy in the world having the same last name as one of the whitest places in the world? Balanced out of course by the exotic, trippy, "were-his-parents-drunk?" colorful first name of course.
I've said many times before, nothing drives me crazier than whenever someone asks where I'm from and after I say "Virginia" they ask "West Virginia?" Grrr. Well. Maybe people who say "are you sitting here?" When I am, you know...sitting here. You see me. You’re talking to me. I haven’t responded with a voice recording stating that I’m sorry, but I am not here at this present time. Also poverty, but mostly the West Virginia thing.

But I will say. They have one of the all-time songs of...all time. I mean, does Virginia have one that's even close? Grrr. It's like God said well, your state stinks, but I'll give you a kick-ass song to make up for it.
