Arms Race

Watching All Creatures Great and Small this morning it occurred to me to wonder why so many British pubs have the word "Arms" in their name....is it "we welcome you with welcome arms", I wondered?

Of course this is the answer:

“'Arms' refers to the heraldic coats of arms which represent families of royal or noble birth, as well as towns, cities and historic guilds. Many pubs take local nobility or landowners into their names.

So I am a fucking idiot. Oh well.
