Al Michaels: People always forget that the U.S. had to win another game on Sunday. So in re-watching the Phi Slamma Jamma 30 for 30 last night it occurred me to ask if the greatest example of the OPPOSITE of this happening is the 1983 Houston team? They beat Louisville in the Final Four semifinal during which everybody - rightfully so - declared the winner to be the REAL national champion, and that of course whoever would be lucky enough to play NC State, who barely belonged in the tournament, would basically be performing a victory lap that Monday night while being crowned. But then Houston lost, rendering all that obsolete. 🤔🤷♂️
John Powers (Boston Globe): It was still possible if the Americans did not beat the Finns, they not only would not win the gold. They wouldn't win any medal at all, and Herb understood this.
Mike Eruzione (Captain, USA 1980): Herb Brooks walked in to the locker room, and he looked at us and he said, "If you lose this game, you'll take it to your fucking grave." Then he stopped, and he walked a couple of steps, turned and looked at us again, and said, "Your fucking grave." - the incredible HBO documentary Do You Believe in Miracles?
